Momentum Cori HD Smart Home Security Camera 2-Pack Review Review 2018 PCMag UK

When I spoke from a remote phone through the camera to a person in the monitored room, their voice was clear enough, though not loud. Sound was even softer when my conversation partner spoke from the monitored room to the phone; I had to listen carefully to understand what was being said. The two-way audio is half-duplex, which means that each person needs to wait for the other to finish before trying to speak. The best perk of opting for a wire-free security camera is being able to place them wherever you want in your home without having to worry about where to plug in or where to splice into. The WyzeCam v2 is an alternative to consider if you’re looking for something affordable that offers a few more advanced features, and at $20, it’s an absolute steal. In the box, you get two Cori HD cameras, power cables and adapters for each camera, a user guide, and mounting stickers.

My home WiFi network has both 2.4GHz and 5GHz on the same SSID and the Momentum app couldn’t see my 2.4GHz network on the Pixel 2. Using an older phone let the app connect the Cori HD and then I could see it on the app on my Pixel 2. It could just be that phone or maybe it’s something to do with Android 9. One of these companies is Momentum, and we’ll be looking at their Cori HD Smart Home Security Camera (2-Pack) today. At $59.00 for a two-pack, it’s an affordable kit for people needing to watch more than one area of their home.

You can buy the dual-camera package from Momentum’s websitefor $59.99. Other cameras are available as well, such as an outdoor camera/floodlight combo for $179.99 and garage door controller with built-in camera for $99.95. At present, you can use Google to turn on the camera; you will soon also be able to turn the device off via Google. The Live View auto-rotates quickly between horizontal and vertical orientations. The app has the controls for two-way audio, plus icons for taking a snapshot or recording video from the Live View.

You’ll occasionally see artifacts in the picture, especially in less than ideal lighting, but it doesn’t compromise the overall viewing experience. There’s also about a full second delay in live streams, which again is irrelevant overall. You have control over resolution and the sensitivity of both motion and sound triggers as well.

Design and Features

A group of three watched their house and waited for the family to leave for a weekly hike. Within just a couple of minutes of them driving off, the gang sprung into action. An outdoor camera was triggered at their driveway and caught them jumping over the gate and onto the property.

On the other hand, because the Cori cameras have tech specs on the lower end of the totem pole, it’s reasonable to wonder if the cameras will soon become obsolete technology. It’s kind of like buying a TV with low resolution when most newer TVs have 4K. But, considering these cameras haven’t been on the market that long, it’s safe to assume the manufacturer will continue to support the devices for quite a while.

Storage

I never ran into serious issues while using the cameras and was always confident in their reliability. For both security and keeping an eye on a new pet, the two cameras were all that I needed. The mobile app for Android and iOS is fairly sparse but does the job.

Being able to deselect motion detect areas is great if you need to stop motion alerts caused by things like traffic outside of your window. Being on the 4th floor I didn’t have to change this, but it’s nice to see it included. Two cameras come in the box, allowing for multi-room setups or a view outside from a window (they’re not rated as dedicated outdoor cameras). The cameras aren’t battery operated and require a wall outlet, and connect to the units via micro-USB . Each wire is generously long and will reach most nearby outlets, and the cameras themselves can either sit on a flat surface or mount to a wall with adhesive pads. The cameras swivel freely on their base and can be set at just about any angle, and with a wide 110-degree view, you shouldn’t have a problem covering any area.

Setting up one or both cameras is fairly straightforward, although make sure to plug in one at a time during setup or Wi-Fi won’t be recognized. After downloading the Momentum app to your smartphone and creating an account, you simply sync the cameras to the Wi-Fi in your home or office and video will start live streaming to your phone. During setup, you’ll be prompted to scan a QR code at the bottom of the camera and a voice through its speaker will confirm when each step is completed.

It’s got motion and sound sensors, 2.4GHz 802.11n WiFi and a microphone and speaker for two-way audio. The Cori HD will start recording when either sound or motion is detected and send you a push notification through the app. To enable event detection, you must create trigger/action rules, but these are relatively flexible. You can, for example, have your living room camera record a video clip and push you an alert whenever it detects motion between 9 am and 5 pm. I got these alerts to be pretty accurate, after a bit of trial and error, and they always arrived shortly after the triggering event.

Like my neighbor’s cameras, two-way audio communication is possible and the speaker at the back of the camera gets very loud. I was able to clearly hear my friend at the other end of the room and vice versa. Sometimes there was a slight buzz in the speaker when two-way audio was activated, but it never stopped it from working.

The dashboard screen displays the name of the camera with a still image of the last captured frame. Tap the Activity button to see a list of motion- and sound-triggered events with thumbnails. Use the Rules button to create rules to have the camera record video and send a push notification when sound or motion is detected. Here you can enable/disable recordings and notifications for specific times of the day and days of the week. Momentum’s Cori security cameras are a real bargain for what you’re getting. Two cameras, HD footage, two-way audio, night vision, 24-hour live streams and two cloud storage options.

Annual plans are also available and you can save around $10 with that option. Tap the still image to launch a live stream that can be viewed in full-screen mode by turning your phone sideways. At the bottom of the stream are buttons for initiating two-way audio, manual video recording, taking a snapshot, and viewing past activity. The mobile app looks identical to the app we used to test the Momentum 720p Wi-Fi Video Camera.

The camera will record video when motion or sound is detected, and it'll send a push notification, a feature not found on the original Momentum 720p Wi-Fi Video Camera. At the end of the day, there is virtually no loss in quality between a wired security camera and its wireless counterpart. If they’re in the same tax bracket, they’re likely to offer similar video quality, monitoring features, motion detection and more.
